Chapter 50
Physical and Logical Addresses

A subnet can be complicated to figure out. The address fields do not allow for more than 255 to be placed in each field. However, it is possible to have host 257 on your network. Host 257 is not written into the address, but using the subnet mask, we can physically have a host 257 on a single network.

Do not confuse the addresses. A subnetted address is still read as if subnetting has not been turned on. It is not written differently. For example, if the address is 130.1.9.1 and the subnet mask is 255.255.248.0, then it is network 130.1, subnet 8, and host 257.

The point here is that you must make sure that you know the subnet mask before trying to determine the host, subnet, and network.
