In this reservation request is a set of options that are collectively known as the reservation style. These options allow for shared or unique (distinct) reservations. Examples of shared reservations are for those invoking the use of multicast. Video and audio apps that make use of multicast are great examples of this. Why have multiple reservations for these receivers when one guaranteed pipe will do? The distinct type of reservation is for one-on-one applications such as a small desktop-to-desktop videoconference or when some other type of high-priority, low-loss data stream is needed.

A receiver may request a confirmation and will indicate this in the Resv message along with its address. One the reservation is confirmed either unique or merged, a confirmation message is sent.
The basic reservation is completed in one pass. This means that the Resv message is sent from one router to another in the reverse path to the sender. Each router along the way has the right to reject an Resv request.
