Joining a Group

Arouter with directly connected neighbors must first join the shared tree. When the DR gets a membership notification from a host, it looks up the associated RP for that group (more information on the RP is coming up). The DR creates a wildcard multicast entry for the group in the form of (*,G). If there is not a specific match for the group, the packet is forwarded according to this entry. The RP address is contained in a special field in the route entry and is included in periodic Join/Prune messages.

The DR sends a Join message to the primary RP. The (*,G) entry indicates a (any source, group) pair. The intermediate router (B) forwards the unicast PIM-JOIN message. Router B also creates a forwarding cache entry for the (*,G) pair, so that they will know how to forward multicast datagrams for the group.
