The following slide shows the comparison between the multicast routing protocol of DVMRP and the host membership protocol IGMP. The protocol of IGMP runs between the hosts and the routers, and the DVMRP protocol runs between the routers.
However, it should be noted that with IPv4, the encapsulation of DVMRP data is accomplished using an IP encapsulation protocol of 2, which is IGMP. If you place a protocol analyzer on the network you will see DVMRP communicating using IP protocol type 2 for IGMP encapsulation. This does not mean that IGMP is running between routers; it is simply using the IGMP encapsulation to send its data.
