Stub Areas

External link advertisements could quickly fill up a routing table. In some instances, a majority of the entries in the routing table will simply be routes external to the OSPF domain. There is one entry for every external route. As you can see, this could quickly fill up a routing table with external routes.

Stub areas were created to reduce these entries. If an area has a single entry or exit point to or from that area that is used for all external traffic, it can be configured as a stub area. A stub area blocks the importation of the AS External Link Advertisements into the area, thereby reducing the number of entries in the stub area’s database.
